There are 40 known and identified abandoned underground coal mines located throughout Pierce County. Land areas that lie over abandoned underground mines have the potential to spontaneously collapse, typically referred to as a subsidence event. The purpose of this Chapter is to promote and protect the public health, safety, and general welfare of the citizens of Pierce County by providing standards to minimize the public and private losses due to subsidence events that may occur to regulated activities located within a mine hazard area.
